Why Killington Is the Ideal Base for Vermont Guided Fishing Tours
Killington is known nationwide for skiing, mountain biking, and four season recreation. Yet most visitors have no idea how close they are to some of Vermont’s finest fishing waters. The surrounding region — including Rutland and Addison Counties — is home to a collection of lakes and ponds served directly by Vermont Fishing Tours, including Lake Dunmore, Lake St. Catherine, Lake Bomoseen, and Lake Hortonia.
These waters offer:
• Quiet, low traffic fishing
• Mountain scenery and natural shorelines
• Productive fisheries with a variety of species
• Close proximity to Killington and nearby resorts
Instead of driving hours to pursue a full day fishing experience, you can reach high quality water in minutes. That makes Killington not just a resort destination — but a perfect hub for guided fishing trips near Vermont resorts in the central part of the state.
Central Vermont Lakes & Ponds Within 15–45 Minutes of Killington
Below are the major lakes and ponds available for guided trips in the Killington region, including those confirmed by the Vermont Fishing Tours site.
⭐ Lake Bomoseen
(approx. 45 minutes from Killington)
Lake Bomoseen is the largest lake entirely within Vermont, offering a mix of rocky shorelines, weedbeds, and deeper channels — perfect for diverse fishing opportunities. Despite its size, huge portions remain peaceful, providing an ideal setting for visitors staying at Killington Resort or other Vermont resort areas who want a scenic, low stress day on the water.
⭐ Lake Dunmore
(approx. 40 minutes from Killington)
Lake Dunmore sits at the foot of the Green Mountains, famous for its clear water, varied structure, and steady action throughout the season. With a landscape that blends mountain backdrops and quiet coves, Dunmore offers one of the most visually striking and enjoyable fishing experiences within easy reach of Killington. It’s also specifically listed as part of the Vermont Fishing Tours offerings.
⭐ Lake Hortonia
(approx. 35 minutes from Killington)
Lake Hortonia stands out as one of the quietest and most peaceful lakes in central Vermont. With twisting shorelines, coves, and wooded scenery, it delivers a true “Green Mountain fishing experience.” This lake is perfect for those who value serenity and natural beauty — and it is one of the lakes confirmed on the Vermont Fishing Tours page.
⭐ Chittenden Reservoir (Chittenden Dam)
(approx. 20–25 minutes from Killington)
Chittenden Reservoir — commonly known as Chittenden Dam — is one of the closest and most striking waters near the Killington resort region. Completely surrounded by forested Green Mountain terrain, this lake offers a remote, wilderness style experience despite being a short drive from Killington. With calm water, exceptional scenery, and quiet shorelines, it’s an ideal option for visitors who want a scenic outing without traveling far.
⭐ Other Hidden Waters (Captain Selected Locations)
(15–45 minutes from Killington)
Beyond the well known lakes listed above, Vermont Fishing Tours also serves a collection of lesser known lakes and ponds across Rutland and Addison Counties. These waters are intentionally not listed publicly because they often have limited access, very low fishing pressure, and offer some of the most genuinely untouched Green Mountain experiences available.
These hidden lakes provide exceptionally quiet water, beautiful scenery, and the kind of intimate, small body fishing opportunities that travelers often describe as the most memorable part of their Vermont vacation. To protect the integrity of these locations, the captain shares details only when guests call to schedule — ensuring each trip is tailored to conditions and seasonal patterns.
No Gear Required — Just Bring a Vermont License
One of the biggest advantages of booking guided fishing trips near Killington is the simplicity. Guests don’t need to pack rods, reels, tackle, or safety equipment — everything is provided.
The only requirement is a Vermont fishing license, easily available online from the state. Once you have that, you’re set for a day of mountain lake adventure.
Two Professional Boat Types for Central Vermont Waters
Your guided trip may take place on one of two specialized boats designed for exploring Vermont’s varied lakes and ponds:
Drift Boat Trips
Perfect for quiet coves, narrow sections, and hands on guiding experiences. Drift boats offer smooth, controlled movement and allow the guide to navigate smaller or more intimate waterbodies with precision.
21’ Lund Boat Trips
Ideal for larger lakes like Bomoseen, Dunmore, or Hortonia. These boats offer comfort, stability, and plenty of room — making them excellent for families, groups, or full day excursions.
Both boats allow guests to enjoy Vermont’s mountain lakes safely and comfortably, providing the flexibility to adapt to water size, weather, and guest preference.

Some times it takes a few weeks for the water to stabilize after heavy winds or fronts, this year has been no exception. who would think that with the sweltering heat that we would be experiencing some of the best trout & Salmon fishing of the season but we have! The last few weeks we have landed Trophy Steelhead, many beautiful Salmon as well as our biggest Lake Trout of the year! Lots of bait in our region of the Lake has kept these trophy fish around and putting smiles on our clients faces! We have wrapped up our summer trolling charters & pulled the Flashpoint as we get her service work done & prep her for our end of season tour out on Lake Ontario. We are still offering jigging trips for Trophy Lake Trout right with excellent numbers coming to the net as well super action that will make your arms sore for days! We will be on Lake Ontario from August 23rd through Sept 20th, then back to Champlain for our fall Bass & Pike tour. We are SO THANKFUL that we have experienced our busiest season since we started, fall dates are sure to fill fast so give us a shout early to get your dates!

Typical Hazy, Hot & Humid summer weather has moved into the Northeast but that hasn't slowed the fishing! We have had groups enjoying both our cold water trolling trips as well as casting trips taking some beautiful Bass & Pike! Trolling trips have seen plenty of Lake Trout coming to the net as well as Landlocked Salmon & Steelhead. We had an evening trolling trip last week with over 25 bites & non stop action all evening! Running Downriggers, Slidediver dipsies & copper long lines, as well as switching baits up regularly has been the key to putting Champlain Trout & Salmon in the box! The Bass ( both Large & Smallmouth) are post spawn now & putting the feed bag on! Chasing swim baits early has had plenty of hook ups, but working docks & deep water drop offs once the sun gets high has been key to putting bass on the deck threw out the whole trip! A bonus Pike or Pickerel on each trip adds to the excitement & the lure of Champlain as well as our other Vermont waters. We have been working hard to follow state advisories in keeping our boats & equipment clean daily, as well as plenty of hand sanitizer for our guests to keep every one safe. We have face masks for those that want them, but many are enjoying the fresh air that Vermont is so well known for and staying mentally healthy as enjoying a day on the water is the BEST therapy known to humanity!

This is that time of year ( end of the first week of March) that one asks should i try & squeak in a few more days of ice fishing or should i begin prepping my boats & open water tackle? Most bodies of water still have safe ice at this time, but we have had 4 - 5 days of above freezing temps with marginal sub freezing at night. That combined with ice thickness well below last year tells me that we really need to pay close attention the next few days. The forcast for the next ten days is showers with only two nights below freezing and the 5 day says temps in upper 50's...i would say is time to wrap it up! A few diehards that know local ice well will still make it a another few weeks, but as a guide its to much to risk. That being said we tailed off the end of February with many groups joining us on the ice , we actually turned away over a half dozen requests during the Presidents holiday week, as this is a very popular time of year for folks to come up to Vermont & taste our winter time activities! Some days we got into them, others we swapped stories & taught lots of beginners the nuances of getting out on the hardwater!

We started off our winter after a break for fall deer season with some trips on the Salmon River targeting Steelhead! Persistent lake effect snow squalls and varying river flows had the ironheads pretty finicky. We did pick up a few in the upper river, while fishing in some of the heaviest lake effect squalls i have ever experienced! pretty cool non the less! As they say, " Classic steelhead weather!
